Fashioning a Foundation for the Computing Profession, 2000 July
This essay was intended to set out a charter for The Profession.
By way of illustration and entertainment, the nine dots puzzle was explained in its traditional
four line form, and a one (straight) line solution was described.
The message of this solution was that it is not only necessary for the computing
professional to "think outside the box" formed by the nine dots, but to think
beyond the piece of paper on which the dots are drawn.
In the upshot, there was no reader comment on the charter, but there was quite a bit
of questioning of the legitimacy of the one-line solution to the puzzle, which involved
forming the sheet of paper into a cylinder.
